There are quite a few well-known instances of online businesses that have all but fallen by the wayside compared to their glory days just a few short years ago.
One easy example would be Yahoo. At one point, it was pretty much the end all, be all of online search. Another example would be AOL. In the early days of the internet, they were a major league player. Then came little startup Google, and the rest is history.
So what was the problem?
Well, it’s not always easy to gauge the sentiment and rationality of the masses of web users. Once something starts to catch on, it can literally spread like wildfire (like Google). But at the same time, it could be a case of other online presences becoming stagnant…and therefore, mostly irrelevant.
It simply makes good sense that in order to stay relevant online, you’ve got to stay fresh.
And this basic principle is just as true for the website of a small business or organization as it is for the top players in the internet industry. As technology continues to move forward at an astoundingly rapid pace, people have also adapted and come to expect the websites that they interface with to be adequately representative of modern technology.
Does this mean that you need to build a new website every 3 months?
Fortunately, this isn’t necessarily the case. You don’t have to change your website or SEM strategy (search engine marketing) with every latest whim or trend of progress. In fact, doing so is likely to have unsuccessful results altogether—after all, solid strategies usually require some degree of longevity as part of their success factor.
But your site’s visitors do demand freshness. This might be delivered in the form of plenty of up-to-date new content. It might be by blogging and using social media networks to keep them informed. And yes, in some cases it might mean a brand new website is in order from time to time.
Web users as a whole have shown that they tend to become bored quickly and easily. This is an incredibly easy (and affordable) problem to stay on top of. You’ve just got to figure out how you can keep connecting with your visitors and what tactics seem to best fit your unique scenario to keep it fresh and keep it relevant.
